Communication in Guinea baboons

Despite baboons being one of the most intensively studied groups of animals on the planet relatively little is known about Guinea baboons (Papio papio).

 

Research has shown that the Guinea baboons live in complex multi-male, multi-female groups with male Guinea baboons showing high levels of tolerance with one another. Chacma baboons, that live in a very different social system based on linear dominance hierarchy have been shown to use grunts as a signal of benign intent to appease low ranking animals.
